ATMs in Holbox Island: Where to Find Them & Tips (2024)
Wondering where to find ATMs in Holbox? I’ve been all over the island looking for ATMs and I know where they are, so I’ll share the location and some tips about credit cards and cash in Holbox.
If you are traveling to Holbox, the first thing you should know is that there are not many ATMs on the island, and the ones there are sometimes out of service due to power outages, or have run out of money.
The most important thing is to bring cash to Holbox, especially Mexican pesos.
But still, if you run out of cash, you have two options:
- Withdraw money at an ATM in Holbox.
- Change money to Mexican pesos at an exchange office.

? Best ATM in Holbox
Of all the ATMs on the island, I personally find the one next to Clandestino Café to be the best.
Inside this BBVA Bank office, there are two ATMs, so there is a better chance that they have money and there are fewer lines for withdrawals. Also, there is air conditioning inside! Which is always a bonus.
Good to know: Keep in mind, that all ATMs charge transaction fees. You can expect a flat fee per withdrawal (up to $10) and/or a percentage of your total transaction. This doesn’t include any fees your home bank may charge.
Where are the ATM Machines in Holbox?
1. CIBanco Bank ATM
This ATM is one of the busiest at peak hours.
The bank itself is pretty easy to spot from the street, but locating the ATM can be a bit tricky. You’ll need to head around to the back of the building, specifically on the left side when you’re facing it from the street.
Good to know: This ATM gives Mexican pesos and it usually works fine with most foreign credit cards, although there have been a few reports of people experiencing issues with their banks.
I managed to withdraw pesos successfully from this ATM back in March of 2024. Several other people in line seemed to have no trouble using it.
The ATM is available 24 hours a day, but the bank is open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekdays (Monday to Friday) and till 3 pm on Saturdays.

2. BBVA ATM Holbox
Right next to Clandestino Coffee Roasters, you will find a BBVA office with two ATMs.
They are the most modern ATMs on the island and for me, the best place to withdraw money in Holbox. They usually have cash and since there are two ATMs, you won’t find as much of a line as the CIbanco ATM.
When I went to withdraw money, there was no one there! Also, since it’s a closed room with glass doors, there is air conditioning inside.

3. Scotiabank ATM
This Scotiabank ATM is located right next to the stairs leading up to the Arena rooftop bar, at the entrance of a store, and is open 24 hours a day.
It’s very easy to find as it’s on one of the busiest streets in Holbox and in front of the main square.

4. La Combi ATM
This ATM only dispenses US Dollars, but you can exchange them for Mexican pesos at the bank or currency exchange office on the island.
Sometimes this ATM is out of order, showing an out-of-service screen.

5. ATM Gomart Holbox
This ATM is located inside the small Gomart supermarket.
Similar to the other ATMs, this one only dispenses US Dollars, but you can exchange them for Mexican pesos at CiBanco or in this exchange office.
Unlike the La Combi ATM, this one seemed to be operational as of March 2024. However, I didn’t attempt to withdraw any money there.

Old ATM in Holbox that no longer exists (2024 Updated)
My list of Holbox ATMs is current as of April 2024, and I noticed on the internet that there are Holbox ATMs that are now closed or no longer in operation.
Holbox Town Hall ATM (CLOSED)
When I visited Holbox back in 2019, the top choice for an ATM was the one on the second floor of the town hall & police station, located at Calle Porfirio Díaz.
However, during my recent visit to the island, I was able to verify that there was no Bancomer ATM there anymore.
Tips for using ATMs on Holbox Island
Decline conversion rate
ATMs aim to make money and often offer worse exchange rates than your bank.
When withdrawing pesos from any ATM, you’ll encounter a screen at the end asking if you want to “accept the conversion rate.” Always hit DECLINE.
By declining, you can avoid losing extra money, which could range from $10 to $100 or more, depending on the amount you’re withdrawing. Don’t worry, the money will still be dispensed from the ATM.
ℹ️ Good to know: If you’re unable to decline the conversion rate at an ATM, it’s best to press “Cancel” and try another ATM, if you don’t want to pay the exchange rate fees.
Always get Mexican pesos
When using the ATM, input the amount you want in pesos, not US dollars. For example, if you need 6000 pesos, input that amount, which is about $360.
While both USD and MXN (Mexican pesos) are accepted on the island, it’s better to pay in pesos to avoid extra charges due to exchange rates offered by businesses.
What to do if there is no money in the ATM
Holbox ATMs are irregularly filled, so they may be empty for a few hours at times, leading to long queues afterward.
Consider returning around 2 or 3 pm the next day, as the ATMs are usually refilled then.
Good to know: There are ATMs in the streets that only dispense USD. You can withdraw USD, and then exchange them at CiBanco (remember to bring your passport) or at the Exchange Office.
Currency Exchange in Holbox Island
Before using ATMs on Holbox Island, it’s important to know about currency exchange rates.
Local businesses mostly prefer Mexican pesos as their main currency. While some places might accept US dollars or credit cards, it’s best to have pesos for smaller shops.
When using the ATM to convert currency, remember that exchange rates can differ.
It’s a good idea to use a trusted currency converter to check the current rates (this is the one I always use). This way, you can make sure you’re getting a fair deal.
